The Defamation Experience: Breaking Barriers through Diversity Programming

The President's Council for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion invites the St. Mary's University community to a three-part online, interactive diversity event.

The Film
Join us to watch the film Defamation, created by award-winning playwright Todd Logan, filmed by award-winning HMS Media. The film explores the highly charged issues of race, class, religion, gender and the law.

The Case: An African-American owner of a small business sues a Jewish real estate developer for defamation after she is accused of stealing his family heirloom. There is no smoking gun.

The Deliberation
The twist: You are the jury.

After watching the film, you will be polled with three options, finding for the plaintiff, for the defendant, or undecided. Attendees can then virtually raise their hand and give their thoughts and opinions on the case and its outcome. After a consensus of voices have been heard, a second poll will decide the outcome of the trial.

The Discussion
Immediately following deliberation and the verdict, expert facilitators will lead a post-show discussion where you can engage in civil discourse that drives self-examination and challenges bias and preconceived notions.
