Day of the Dead Prayer: An Offering Embodied in an Altar of Remembrance

The prayer will be in Guadalupe Chapel and will be limited to 45 participants. To reserve your spot, email Jose De Leon at jdeleon11@stmarytx.edu.

The ofrenda will be will be set up in Guadalupe sanctuary in place of the altar. The ofrenda consists of three levels to represent the three levels of death that a soul must travel. A background will be created using swags of fine cloth, purple crepe paper, along with bright tissue papel picado.

As the ritual unfolds, members of the St. Mary’s community will be invited to participate in the building of the ofrenda by placing photographs and mementos of their deceased loved ones. Other elements which will be part of the creation of the living altar are include calacas, calaveritas de azúcar, pan de muerto, candles, water and salt, cempazuchitl, papel picado and copalli.
