Mass for Blessed Jakob Gapp, S.M.
Tuesday, Aug. 13
12:30 p.m.
Reinbolt Hall, Assumption Chapel

Blessed Jakob Gapp, S.M., a professed Marianist, was born in Austria on July 26, 1897. He served on the Italian front during World War I and was a prisoner of war from 1918-1919. Upon returning home, Gapp discovered the Society of Mary and professed his first vows in 1921, and later was ordained to the priesthood in 1930.

At this time, Nazism began to grow in Germany and Austria. Gapp was vehemently opposed to the Nazi regime, and, through his teaching and preaching, became vocal about the incompatibility between National Socialism and Christianity. Gapp was noted by the Nazi regime for his beliefs and was later captured by the Gestapo. In 1943, he was imprisoned and sentenced to death.

Gapp is remembered as a Marianist martyr of World War II. Blessed Jakob Gapp, S.M., was beatified by Pope John Paul II on Nov. 24, 1996.
